Zaretsky Declares Turrell Victory

Art lawyer Donn Zaretsky is the author of the The Art Law Blog where he informs us that he represented James Turrell in his case against former Albion gallerist, Michael Hue-Williams.

I would just emphasize that the case was always really about the so-called Tall Glass series of work and, on that score, the resolution is a complete victory for Turrell. Recall this New York Sun article from early on, entitled Lawsuit Aims to Force Artist to Create Art. Well, not only was Turrell NOT forced to create any work, but as part of the settlement Hue-Williams “expressly relinquish[es] any rights” to the Tall Glass series. Hue-Williams was also required to take the rather extraordinary step of sending a letter to collectors

Dealer Struggles to be Honorable

Michael Hue-Williams has been dealing with the bankruptcy of Albion, his gallery which is having some of its stock sold, according to The Art Newspaper:

Roger Cutting, the Charterfields agent handling the sale on behalf of the administrators, said: “When this case started we were able to come to terms with Michael in terms of stock he wanted to buy back, and what he wanted to pay for it against valuation.” He added: “Michael was able to offer a premium price for a bulk of the stock to continue an art business. He has links with these artists, so in many ways, he is the best placed to own [it].” Geoffrey Martin & Co, the liquidators of Michael Hue-Williams Fine Art Limited, declined to comment.Continue Reading
