This Is What the Buyer of the Leonardo Is Paying For

November 10, 2017 by Marion Maneker

Did you ever imagine you would see Leonardo di Caprio in front of a Leonardo da Vinci? You can in this video Christie’s made filming viewers of Salvator Mundi as it has been on display this week in New York. After lines around the block in San Francisco and London, jaded New Yorkers flocked to Rockefeller center. The awed crowds are a big part of the marketing for Christie’s; if a buyer emerges beyond the guarantor, their confidence and motivation will have been bolstered by these crowds.

Here Christie’s captures the emotions of viewers like Patti Smith, di Caprio, art advisor Anthony Grant and others in their crypt-like gallery.

French Auction House Discovers Leonardo Drawing, Waits for Gov’t to Decide on Sale

December 12, 2016 by Marion Maneker

The New York Times devotes a lot of space to promoting France’s Tajan auction house and its purported discovery of a Leonardo drawing plumping for a price above $15m for the work.

What Did Sotheby’s Know And When Did They Know It

November 28, 2016 by Marion Maneker

Leonardo, Salvator Mundi

Perhaps you’ve heard of this lawsuit where the dealers who bought a $10,000 painting and sold it for $80m are upset that the buyer was representing another buyer who sold it for almost $50m more?

Such is the trouble that Yves Bouvier’s dealings with Dmitry Rybolovlev have caused. Bouvier, acting in the interest of Rybolovlev, bought works of art that he then sold on to the Russian at huge markups. The whole scheme fell apart a few winters ago in St. Barth’s when an art advisor clued Rybolovlev in to the prices Bouvier was actually paying.

The New York Times has a story going into further detail. The dealers who sold Leonardo’s Salvator Mundi feel that Sotheby’s, which sourced a dozen of the works Bouvier sold to Rybolovlev, should have helped them get around Bouvier so they could make the higher sale to Rybolovlev themselves.

Here’s what the Times says is the dealer’s evidence:Continue Reading

Leonardo’s Salvator Mundi Sale Confirmed at $75-80m

March 3, 2014 by Marion Maneker

Leonardo, Salvator Mundi

Scott Reyburn is on fire at the International New York Times. Today he confirms last year’s sale of the re-discovered Leonardo that was featured in the London show of the master’s work:

The heavily restored painting, dating from about 1500, was bought by an unidentified collector for between $75 million and $80 million in May 2013, in a private sale brokered by Sotheby’s. The details of the purchase have remained locked in confidentiality clauses until they were revealed this week by trade insiders, such as the London dealer Anthony Crichton-Stuart.

“It’s a trophy painting by a highly important artist,” Mr. Crichton-Stuart said. “You have to balance its compromised condition against the fact that it is by one of the most magical and significant names in the entire canon of Western art, and in that sense, it feels like a fair price.”
