Sotheby’s Selling Arp as First Show in US for 30yrs Opens

October 24, 2018 by Marion Maneker

The Arp Foundation points out that the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas’s new show of Jean Arp’s work is the first major museum exhibition for the artist in the US in thirty years. Meanwhile, Sotheby’s has this work on offer in the Impressionist and Modern Evening sale with an estimate of $2-3m.

Here’s the Nasher’s description of their show:

Bringing together more than 80 objects, including sculptures, reliefs, collages, drawings, textiles, and books, The Nature of Arp will include works drawn from prominent U.S. and European museums, foundations, and private collections. Organized by the Nasher Sculpture Center, the exhibition will be accompanied by a richly illustrated catalogue including essays by several authors, including Catherine Craft, Nasher Curator and curator of the exhibition.

It’s sculpture week in the auction house press departments as Sotheby’s releases its own highlights of the May sales with the $17m collection of David and Laura Finn.

The Evening Sale will offer a selection of five sculptures from the Finns’ collection, with works by Moore, Alberto Giacometti, Jean Arp, Germaine Richier and Marino Marini together estimated in excess of $17 million. This group is united further by the fact that each piece was conceived in the late 1950s, during the period of turmoil and uncertainty following World War II.

Highlights from the collection will be shown in Hong Kong from 21-24 April, before returning to New York for public exhibition beginning 5 May.

Straight to the Arp

February 10, 2012 by Marion Maneker

Georgina Adam points out that Luxembourg & Dayan are showing works by Jean Arp in the London space which seems presciently timed because Arp was the unsung hero of the Imp-Mod sales with many strong showings at the kinds of price points that don’t make headlines. (Above is the artist’s Balcon 1—with accompanying narration by Olivier Camu—which sold for £1.3m a nearly 50% above the £800k high estimate at Christie’s this week.)

Arps have been bubbling along in the Imp-Mod sales for a few sales cycles both in London and New York but this week marks a real turning point in their momentum:

“Arp is an artist who influences art itself rather than individual artists.” The quote comes from Sir Herbert Read’s monograph on Jean Arp, the French-German artist currently being shown in a “petit salon” by Luxembourg & Dayan. The New York and London dealers, established last year in Savile Row, have selected 29 works: one a poster by Kurt Schwitters advertising a Dada evening, all the rest by Arp. Seven drawings were illustrations for a 1923 Tristan Tzara book, and are accompanied by his poems; there are also embroideries and two “string” paintings from the 1920s and 1930s, as well as a wall of reliefs from the 1930s. About a third of the show is for sale, with prices ranging from $200,000 to $1m.
