Italy has campaigned aggressively in recent years against foreign collectors, both individuals and institutions, that it argues have purchased artifacts with questionable provenances. In 2006 the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York reached an accord with Italy over the return of artifacts with an uncertain past, and deals with museums in Boston; Princeton, N.J.; and Cleveland followed.

The campaign seems to be paying off in other ways too, said Gen. Giovanni Nistri, the leader of the Carabinieri’s specialized art theft squad. Speaking at a news conference in Rome on Thursday, General Nistri said that 2009 “saw a notable decrease in tomb raiding.”

Brushfire Closes Getty Center in LA

July 8, 2009 by Marion Maneker

LA Now covers the 1o acre brushfire near the Getty Center that has caused the museum to close for the day:

Ron Hartwig, vice president of communications, says they are evacuating employees and visitors from the Getty Center. Visitors are taking the tram to get their cars, then they are driving up the hill to the South Gate, to keep the main entrance clear. It’s just a precaution, he says. The fire is on the hillside west of the entrance.

At Mount St. Mary’s, no classes were in session, but 200 people renting out facilities there are being removed. About 100 staffers were also taken out.

Updated at 3 p.m.: The Getty Center is closed for the day. Officials said it could reopen Thursday if the fire is extinguished.
