Christie’s is announcing a significant Gerhard Richter painting from 1983 that will be on offer in London October 4th. The work goes on display Tuesday September 4th in Hong Kong. There are six or eight of these Richter skull paintings, depending upon whether you count the skull with candle or skull with abstract painting. Of the six paintings that depict a single skull, three are in museums, one is on loan from a private collector to a museum and two are not in public collections.
This particular skull painting has not been seen publicly in 30 years, Christie’s says. It is a bit larger than the one sold in May of 2000. The buyer at that time paid $1.49m. This work is being offered with estimate upon request but the whisper number is somewhere between £12-18m, an estimate that reflects the substantial elevation of Richter’s stature on the art market and the overall rise in art market values.
