Lisa Schiff Explains Cindy Sherman Before Market Moment

May 11, 2017 by Marion Maneker

The Mnuchin Gallery exhibition of Cindy Sherman’s work co-curated by Philippe Ségalot and Sukanya Rajaratnam has proved a magnet for the art press. In this video, art advisor Lisa Schiff walks through the show with Bloomberg’s James Tarmy. They don’t really get to the video’s central question—why is Sherman’s art worth so much money?—but that’s not really the point. (By the way, the answer lies more in the originality, historical importance and compelling nature of her imagery than whether her work is an investment.) As Tarmy points out, there are a number of Sherman works on the market next week, including some of her more recognizable images.

Judd Tully interviews Philippe Ségalot co-curator of Cindy Sherman “Once Upon a Time” 1981- 2011 Mnuchin Gallery exhibition. You’ll have to be patient with the sound but otherwise a good look at a great show.

The Sherman Market Has a Brain

May 10, 2012 by Marion Maneker

You’re not seeing double. These are two different lots of Cindy Sherman‘s Untitled #94. The two works were on offer in very different settings. Phillips de Pury sold the one on top tonight in its evening sale with a $1-1.5m estimate. (Zach Miner must have been pretty hot for the picture.) The other went into Christie’s day sale with a $300-500k estimate. The folks at Christie’s clearly had bigger fish to fry.

The disparate estimates caused some confusion among observers. (We had assumed the works were different sizes at first and said so in print.) But no matter how battered and scattered the Cindy Sherman market may have become this week, the wisdom of the crowd asserted itself. Both works sold for the exact same price: $722,500 with premium.

Sherman’s March

MoMA’s Cindy Sherman retrospective—along with a series of strong prices at auction for her work—has set off a market saturating rush of work this May in New York. By our count, there will be 26 Shermans on offer in two weeks time. Many of those are Centerfolds, including another example of the original print being offered at Christie’s.

Each of the three auction houses has a Centerfold in their Evening sales along with some other examples of her work totaling seven Evening lots and 19 day sale lots.

Christie’s Goes Back to Cindy Sherman Centerfold

Reuters has Akron Art Museum’s sale of Cindy Sherman’s Untitled #96 which Christie’s will be offering in May and hopes to make another record price:

“The museum acquired this work in 1981, the year of its creation, showcasing the forward-thinking approach of the institution,” said Christie’s international head of post-war and contemporary art Brett Gorvy.

Christie’s sold another nearly life-size image depicting Sherman dressed as a schoolgirl last year for $3.89 million, a record price for any photograph sold at auction at the time. That record has since been surpassed.

Gorvy said the auction house was confident it would achieve another record price.
