Matisse, Munch Lead Christies April Prints

Christie’s is anchoring its April sale of Prints and Multiples with major works by Henri Matisse and Edvard Munch. Classic images like a complete set of Matisse’s Jazz and Munch’s Madonna, Angst and Vampyr.

Christie’s is pleased to announce the two-day sale of Prints and Multiples taking place over four sessions from April 17-18. The auction view will be open to the public at Christie’s New York galleries from April 13-17.

The sessions on Wednesday, April 17th will feature a strong selection of Post-War and Contemporary prints led by a complete set of Andy Warhol’s Shadow’s II screenprints ($200,000-300,000), Gerhard Richter’s September($100,000 – 150,000) and a selection of woodcuts by Helen Frankenthaler from the Tales of the Genji series. Following the success of the Warhol Sunsets online auction in 2018, other Contemporary highlights include ten unique Sunset prints from the eponymous series with starting estimates spanning from $25,000 to $40,000.

The sale of Modern Prints will begin on Thursday, April 18th and is comprised of property from notable collections including States of Mind: Important Prints by Pablo Picasso, Edvard Munch, and Henri Matisse  and The Arrogant Eye: Prints from The Collection of the Late Larry Saphire. Additional Modern highlights include a complete set of Henri Matisse’s Jazz ($400,000-600,000) and Flûtiste et Dormeuse IX ($80,000 – 120,000) an example Pablo Picasso’s celebrated monotypes.

Anchoring the Modern session is States of Mind, a group of exceptional prints by Pablo Picasso, Edvard Munch and Henri Matisse. States of Mind is among the most significant collections of Edvard Munch prints to come to market in recent years, and includes examples of his Madonna ($300,000-500,000), Vampyr ($200,000-300,000), Ashes II($70,000-100,000), and Angst ($600,000-800,000).

Matisse highlights from this collection include three large odalisques: Nu au coussin bleu ($40,000-60,000), Nu au coussin bleu à côte d’une cheminée ($80,000-120,000), andGrand odalisque à la culotte bayadère ($300,000-500,000).

The Picasso works include an example of the artist’s first print Le Repas Frugal ($100,000-150,000 and two important prints from the Vollard Suite: Faune Dévoilant une femme ($70,000-100,000) and Minotaur Caressant Une Dormeuse ($60,000-80,000).
