How Seriously Should We Take These Banksy Sales Claims? It used to be that the art press used self-reported gallery sales at art fairs as a way to gauge the mood of the market at any given time. Now The Art Newspaper, which promoted London gallerist Steve Lazarides’ Banksy show with a preview article, is broadcasting sales from the exhibition:
- “Three paintings priced between £500,000 and £1.5m sold within 24 hours of the show opening to VIPs, according to Steve Lazarides, the gallery owner who is credited with launching Banksy’s career (though they rarely speak today).” …
Front International, the Cleveland Triennial, Opens: Kelly Crow has a great catalogue of the Midwestern city’s regionally-flavored art event that combines museum, civic and public spaces into a broad art showcase:
- “The triennial is also re-creating a 12-story abstract mural by Julian Stanczak, a Polish painter who settled outside Cleveland after World War II. In 1973, he installed his striped piece on the side of a building in downtown Cleveland, and before he died last year, he gave Front permission to paint the same work in the same spot, at the corner of Prospect Avenue and Ninth Street.” …
