Christy Maclear Out at Sotheby’s Art Agency, Partners: ARTnews is reporting that the former head of the Robert Rauschenberg foundation is no longer with AAP:

  • Sotheby’s declined to comment on the nature of MacLear’s departure, and MacLear did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Sotheby’s provided ARTnews with the following statement this afternoon:

We are grateful for Christy’s leadership as we expanded our advisory services to artists, artist estates and foundations and wish her much success in her future endeavours.

A Note About Summer Publication: Our newsletter will shift to an occasional schedule over the Summer. It should be published regularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays with the occasional Wednesday edition. We will continue to post on the website when appropriate, so feel free to check there for updates in between newsletters. …

African Art Foundation Buys Big Shonibare: The FT’s Collecting column written by Melanie Gerlis has two interesting pieces of news, the first is that the Norval Foundation and Sculpture Garden has opened in Cape Town, South Africa. The foundation is funded by Nigerian-born, UK businessman Louis Norval and run by Elana Brundyn who spent four years launching the Zeitz private museum also in Cape Town:

  • The foundation’s latest acquisition is Yinka Shonibare’s seven-metre colourful fibreglass “Wind Sculpture (SG) III” (2018), for £750,000, through Goodman Gallery. The first edition from this nine-part series, “Wind Sculpture (SG) I” is currently on display in New York’s Central Park until October 14 (through James Cohan gallery and the Public Art Fund). …

Cheim & Read Is Transition to a Different Gallery Model: The news came out yesterday that Cheim & Read has announced the gallery will move uptown in New York City to a new location where it will show special projects but continue to do art fairs and support its artists. Among them are Ghada Amer, Lynda Benglis, Jack Pierson, Louise Bourgeois, Ron Gorchov, Jonathan Lasker, Sean Scully, and Adam Fuss. …

David Zwirner Has Launched a Podcast with Jeff Koons & Luke Sysons in First Episode: The first episode of a new podcast by Lucas Zwirner, director of publications for David Zwirner Gallery, is out with Jeff Koons and the Met’s Luke Syson. Zwirner calls the podcast Dialogues. It’s conceit is an artist from their stable talking to “a major cultural figure.” Whatever the merits of the concept, the conversation in the first episode is pretty good with Koons sounding more comprehensible about his art than he often does in interviews.
