New and interesting takes on the sales at Art Basel keep coming even though the fair is now over.

Here’s Sam Orlofsky on Twitter talking about a major shift in demand:

The thing NONE of these Basel postmortems have identified is the impact of the END of the private foundation boom. We had a 15+ year run of dozens of collections using these fairs like “Supermarket Sweep.” Every single booth could get bailed out by a visit. No mas.

— sam orlofsky (@SamOrlofsky) June 18, 2018

Artsy wraps up the fair with some more PR work by Marc Spiegel trying to deflect the issue of whether Art Basel is responsible for the pressures on independent galleries, including the first mentions of the fair’s editorial initiatives which have added cost to the firm with dozens of new hires but yet to really leverage the fair’s massive social media footprint.

Here are the sales Artsy gathered:

Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects

  • one new collector had seen a painting by Sadie Benning featured on Art Basel’s website, then came and bought it
  • sold four other Sadie Benning paintings
  • three Charles Gaines tree works
  • a painting by Nicole Eisenman
  • three paintings by Samuel Levi Jones
  • a large selection of over a dozen photographs by Pope.L that all went to a single collector in Vancouver.
  • Prices in the booth started at around $10,000 and went up to around $200,000

Kate McGarry Gallery

  • three sets of Samson Kambalu’s Mboya Series (2016) for £15,000 each
  • some of B. Wurtz’s pan paintings for £4,000 to £7,500
  • Francis Upritchard’s Octopus with Fish (2017), which had appeared in last year’s Venice Biennale, for £30,000, as well as several works not on the booth

Pilar Corrias

  • a corner painting by Madani
  • a glass mosaic work, Zarina, from a new series by Sikander for $90,000
  • a set of Ian Cheng drawings; a painting by Self
  • another painting by Quarles, with prices in the booth from $20,000 to €250,000

Melanie Gerlis had these sales in the Financial Times:

Maureen Paley

  • Rebecca Warren’s painted bronze “Aurelius” (2017) to a foundation in Spain (£380,000)

Paula Cooper

  • Christian Marclay’s “80 East 11th Street” (1990-91), a painted wooden door and sound recording, which went to a US collector ($500,000)

A confusing mix of impressions continue to come out from Art Basel as dealers plump for this year’s fair. Observers inside the fair like Josh Baer have remarked upon high asking prices which, he concludes, may have offset diminishing sales, especially for second-tier or ancillary objects like drawings or preparatory works.

But the dealers offer superlatives in a variety of outlets. Here’s a snippet from Reuter’s report:

Marc Glimcher, who heads one of the world’s biggest gallery enterprises, Pace, said: “Art Basel is always good, but it isn’t always this-year good. I think many people had the best first day of Art Basel they’ve ever had.”

Scott Reyburn makes the odd case in the New York Times that Art Basel was dominated by blue chip buying—supposedly the result of “today’s polarized and ‘financialized’ art world”—but then offers these examples of artists no one considers blue chip like Cathy Wilkes.

“Everyone is doing the same thing, with more or less success,” said Sebastien Montabonel, a London-based art consultant who specializes in advising institutions, referring to the proliferation of Mitchells, Condos, Longos and Kapoors on offer downstairs. “They’re showing what the bank manager wants to buy,” he added.

More detailed and comprehensive reporting on the fair is available to subscribers below.

More on the ground reports say the fair is subdued sales wise with some buyers reporting getting substantial discounts without much of a fight. The slow selling environment might account for some of the over-aggressive dealer claims like the talk coming from Hauser about their Guston and the over-ripe claims from Lévy Gorvy about their Joan Mitchell business.

Though Lévy Gorvy now says their untitled Mitchell work (above) has been sold and their representative claims one of the co-founders was mis-quoted when he said he’d sold several Mitchell works over the past few months in the mid-teens. “Dominque and Brett have been active in the Joan Mitchell market for a long time,” the rep says, “and have placed several works in the $10-15 million range over the last few years.”

Anny Shaw reports in The Art Newspaper that Kerry James Marshall made two sales at Art Basel for undisclosed prices:

Jack Shainman Gallery sold a new painting, Vignette (The Kiss) (2018), while David Zwirner sold Vignette #12 (2008); both pieces went to private US collectors.

Villa Medici

Thaddaeus Ropac is reporting additional sales and offered this statement:

‘This year’s Art Basel stands out as one of the most successful for Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac in our history of participating at this pre-eminent fair. Even before the fair opened we noticed that interest and enthusiasm for what were bringing to the fair was at an all-time high and there was a sustained palpable excitement of both the discerning collectors and the significant number of important institutions on our stand. Art Unlimited has such a special role in making this week a priority for the ever-more international audience of Art Basel so we were thrilled that Robert Longo’s Death Star II was such a sensation this year whilst also leaving a legacy in terms of the percentage of the sale price supporting an important cause.’

]

Freeman’s report has to be taken with a little caution when one reads this from his conversation with Iwan Wirth:”Philip Guston’s The Visit  (1955) went for what Wirth would only say was more expensive than the $16 million Mitchell he sold.”

In the first place, Hauser + Wirth is reporting their Mitchell at $14m. Second, The Visit was bought at auction in November for $8.35m. H + W ought to get a mark-up from that sale but it is highly unlikely it exceeded 100% of the gallery’s cost. Update: Several attendees report that H + W and is pushing the stroy that The Visit sold before the fair for close to $20m.

The early sales—both pocket sales and real ones on the stands—are trickling in. Collectors on the ground report “no fire works but steady business, apparently” reflecting the always gauzy nature of the art market’s transparency. We’re hearing that Sadie Coles sold an Elizabeth Peyton for $575k; Ropac sold one for $475k; and Gagosian has sold a Lichtenstein for $2.5m.

Hauser + Wirth announced this evening that its Joan Mitchell was sold for $14m to a European collection. The speed of the sale following on the success of another similar Mitchell at auction suggests the sale was arranged before the fair and concluded upon viewing.
