Sotheby’s Moves a Specialist to California: It’s no secret that there’s plenty of money and an abundance of buyers on the West Coast of the United States. Until now, neither Sotheby’s nor Christie’s has been able to figure out how to staff their very important California offices. Part of the problem is that the specialists are all in London and New York hopping on a plane to whenever there’s a big prize in the offing. Now Sotheby’s has decided to take a leap and station a rising specialist from London to LA where he’ll be Chairman of Sotheby’s West Coast:
- Mr. Bompard began his career in 2001 in the Books & Manuscripts department at Sotheby’s in Paris. In June 2008, he moved to the Impressionist & Modern Art Department, rising to head of department in 2011. After taking a year to work as an independent dealer, successfully participating in many of largest European art fairs, Thomas returned to Sotheby’s in 2015, joining the Impressionist and Modern Art in London as a Senior International Specialist. In 2016, he assumed responsibility for London’s flagship Evening Sales in this category, masterminding the Company’s widely acclaimed Actual Size auction in June 2017. During his time at the helm of the London Evening sales, many major records have been set and historic milestones achieved – not least that of the highest totaling sale ever staged in Europe and, more recently, that of Pablo Picasso’s Femme au Beret, which sold for $70 million in February 2018 – the highest price for any work of art sold in Europe since 2010. …
Zsa Zsa Gabor’s Estate Makes $900k at Heritage: Among the lots were a portrait of the star by friend Margaret Keane sold for $45,000. Keane gained notoriety for her paintings of “big-eyed waifs,” which became the subject the 2014 film Big Eyes. Gabor’s five-piece group of vintage Louis Vuitton luggage brought $27,500. Strong bidding spurred a 1927 Steinway Model M Grand Piano, from her marriage with actor George Sanders and used in the 2013 film Behind the Candelabra, to sell for $23,750. A diamond and 14-karat gold necklace sold for $20,000. Getty Museum Names James Ganz Curator of Photographs: The Getty Museum announced the appointment of James A. Ganz to Senior Curator of Photographs. He spent ten years at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, where he served as Curator of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts. Ganz will oversee the museum’s collection of nearly 150,000 photographs, including strong holdings of early European and American photography, as well as significant holdings of work from Asia, Africa, and South America, and 20th and 21st-century photographs. Ganz received his Ph.D. in art history from Yale University, his M.A. from Williams College, and his B.A. from Trinity College. His specializations include 19th-century European and American photography, as well as California-based photographers, including Carleton Watkins, Eadweard Muybridge, Willard Worden, Peter Stackpole, and Arnold Genthe.
