An interesting late report comes from an unexpected direction.
This morning it was reported that the Steve Wynn is selling two Picassos and a Warhol this season at Christie’s. This prompted Katya Kazakina to check her sources which revealed an additional sale at Art Basel in Hong Kong:
Wynn, 76, one of the top U.S. collectors of modern and contemporary art, had already parted with Warhol’s 1981 “Superman.” The painting was exhibited by Acquavella Galleries at Art Basel Hong Kong. The asking price was $19.5 million and the work sold during the fair, according to the New York gallery, which declined to identify the consignor. “Superman” fetched $14.4 million at Sotheby’s in 2015.

Tina Keng Gallery
- Zao Wou-ki’s oil “12.89-02.90” (1989-90) went to an Asian private collection for $24m
Gerlis repeats the error of reporting the de Kooning at Lévy Gorvy as having sold for $35m which even the gallery has not said. They’ve announced $35m as an asking price (see below). If Tina Keng sold a $24m Zao Wou-ki, it would rank among the top prices paid for the artist and be a significant market moment for Zao whose market also saw another near-record price at Poly Auction over the same weekend.
The Financial Times had these sales:

Art Basel and Lévy Gorvy are excited about the sale of Paul Allen’s 1975 Willem de Kooning painting in the first hours of the fair. They see it as a signal of the fair’s maturity and ability to host transactions at the highest level. Asia’s collectors are flattered; Art Basel is chuffed; and Lévy Gorvy positions itself above the competition.
What’s most interesting about the publicity surrounding the sale (see the Bloomberg video above) is how quickly Lévy Gorvy allowed the price to get elided from a $35m asking price to reports of a $35m selling price—which do not come from Lévy Gorvy which has neither announced the selling price nor identified the buyer as Asian.
In this age of instantaneous WeChat file-sharing, though, one might speculate as to where the decision to buy the work was actually made. When the buyer received LG’s pitch? When he or she discussed it with the advisor who laid out a range of comparable works and prices? Over dinner before the opening? Or in the first hours of the fair when then buyer stood in front of the canvas to say yeah or nay?
According to Eileen Kinsella at Artnet, who reported it because “Gorvy told artnet News immediately after the sale,”
The gallery sent out a brochure to individual clients roughly two weeks before the fair. The understanding was that everything shown had to be available on the day of the fair. Interested buyers could place a hold on the work, but only for an hour.
Since Kinsella tells us the work was sold fewer than two hours into the fair, does that mean a buyer with a hold for the first hour passed?
A further clue comes in Barbara Pollack’s report. She has this detail that undercuts the carefully crafted scenario that was reported by Artnet:
According to Dominique Lévy, the gallery had been in discussions with the buyer for some time, but he came to Art Basel Hong Kong to confirm his interest and the sale was finalized.
Lévy had her own sales to broadcast, according to Kinsella:
Also within hours of the opening, the gallery announced the sale of four paintings by Pat Steir, whose star has been on the rise since Dominique Lévy began representing her just over two years ago. Her work, from a new series titled “For Hong Kong,” inspired by Chinese poetry and culture, clearly struck a chord with buyers. All had an asking price in the region of $500,000 and were bought by private collectors and foundations in Asia.
(Art Basel’s final sales reporting says six works by Steir.)
