The Getty’s Endowment Hits $6.9bn, a New High: Museum budgets and endowments have been getting a fair bit of attention lately as smaller institutions struggle with art sales to shore up operating expenses. With that in mind, it is worth noting that the Getty Museum released its annual report last week which included a chart showing the endowment at $6.9bn, slightly above the two previous peak years at $6.7bn in 2014 and 2015. …
“I sometimes ask myself, why am I compelled to collect certain artists in
depth, and not others?”: J. Tomlinson Hill is putting on a show at the H Queen’s building of Christopher Wool’s work from his own collection. The show opens March 27:

How Did the Frieze LA Launch Announcement Get So Bungled? Frieze may or may not be launching a new art fair in Los Angeles a little less than a year from now. But if IMG-WME owned fair does go through with the endeavor, it will have to fight the additional headwinds of negative publicity for the idea of a major LA art fair generated over the last few days. That’s a shame. Although there are admittedly many hurdles to creating another major art fair and doing that in Los Angeles, there are as many or more reasons for Frieze to try.
- Since IMG-WME bought the fair, there has been no significant move toward expanding its reach either physically or digitally.
- Los Angeles art collectors (and the sought-after folks up North in SF and Seattle) like to say they bought their art in New York or London but Frieze is one of the few fairs that can bring New York and London to Los Angeles.
- Los Angeles is the US gateway to the Pacific Rim. Buyers from Seoul, Singapore and Shanghai can get to Los Angeles as easily as they can get to London. And much easier than they can get to New York. These are the buyers galleries seek.
- FIAC has been rumored to be interested in expanding to Los Angeles. Art Basel is unlikely to add any more fairs. But for Frieze to put itself on a part with Art Basel and keep ahead of TEFAF, taking the risk on Los Angeles would be strategically wise.
If Frieze LA does become a reality, let’s hope the firm puts more thought into the announcement than it did into last week’s leak. …
