Chucked Close: The National Gallery in Washington, DC has canceled two shows by male artists—Chuck Close and Thomas Roma—accused of sexual misconduct, according to the New York Times late last week:
- About two dozen paintings, photographs and works on paper by Mr. Close were to have been shown in tower three of the National Gallery’s East Building, as part of a rotating series of installations known as “In the Tower,” Ms. Guthrie said.
- The gallery also canceled an exhibition of photographs planned for September by Thomas Roma, a documentary photographer and former professor who had also been accused of sexual misconduct, Ms. Guthrie said. The photographs focused on worshipers in African-American churches in Brooklyn. …
Sottsass Show Canceled at Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam: The Art Newspaper reports that the Stedelijk Museum has decided to cancel a show of Ettore Sottsass’s work featuring 80 objects owned by the museum and 30 additional pieces from collectors because the designer’s widow has objected to the show’s thematic organizing principle, including Sottsass’s influence on younger desginers. The museum considered going ahead despite the widow’s refusal to approve the use of Sottsass’s writings but decided against it when the designer’s gallery expressed stronger objections putting the lenders in a potentially awkward position. …
Sotheby’s Stock Is Back Approaching Previous Highs: When last we left Sotheby’s stock (BID) six months ago, the price had fallen from a multi-year high of $57 to just below $43. Since that time, the stock has been on steady, though not without some down drafts, climb back to $55 late on Thursday, after the auction house announced further digital and data acquisitions. A month from now, earnings for the all-important fourth quarter will be released just as the London sales of Impressionist and Modern art art taking place.
