Grimm Gallery

  • sold out William Monk‘s paintings at the booth with prices ranging from USD 5,000 up to 26,000
  • sold nine paintings by Caroline Walker ranging from GBP 4,000.00 to 25,000
  • a wall based work by Nick van Woert that sold for USD 15,000—Van Woert will be our inaugural show in New York, opening on Bowery 202 next month June 2nd
  • a sculpture by Matthew Day Jackson and a painting by Michael Raedecker, both priced well over USD 100,000 now on hold going into the last day on Randall’s Island

Mendes Wood DM

  • mostly pre-sold its booth, largely to Brazilian and U.S. collectors who’d put things on hold after seeing them via email and at the gallery’s opening in New York on Tuesday
  • The works—by Adriano Costa, 2016 Turner Prize nominee Michael Dean, Solange Pessoa, Sonia Gomes, and Luiz Roque—ranged between $10,000 and $50,000.

Hauser & Wirth

  • Lorna Simpson‘s work sold on the range from $150,000 to $300,000 on opening day, going to both major museums and private collections

David Zwirner

  • sold out of works four sculptures and one work on paper by Carol Bove for $50,000 to $550,000
  • Five photographs by William Eggleston from his “Democratic Forest” series were being shown for the first time since they were shot in the 1980s and sold as well, for $185,000

Jack Shainman Gallery

  • a large-scale work by El Anatsui for $1.1 million
  • a mixed-media work by Nick Cave for $75,000
  • a work on paper by Toyin Ojih Odutola for $40,000
  • Additional works by Radcliffe Bailey, Hayv Kahraman, and Brad Kahlhamer also sold for undisclosed prices

Thaddaeus Ropac

  • Robert Longo, Untitled (Obama Leaving) (2017) selling for $550,000
  • Georg Baselitz painting, Bergspitze (2010), went for the same amount
  • a Robert Rauschenberg work on brass sold for $675,000

Garth Greenan Gallery

  • Paul Feeley‘s Alpharatz (1964) sold to a private collection for $400,000

  • eight drawings by Irma Blank had sold for between $18,500 and $30,000

Cardi Gallery

  • a work by Giuseppe Penone, Palpebra (1990)

As is often the case, Lehmann Maupin was one of the first to report sales at Frieze New York:

Lehmann Maupin

  • Two canvases from Liza Lou’s ingxube series have sold in the range of $175,000-$250,000 USD, with another on reserve.
  • Two of Catherine Opie‘s portraits sold in the range of $40,000-$50,000 USD, with multiple reserves on works from her Untitled landscapes series.
  • Two of Mary Corse’s paintings sold in the range of $80,000-$120,000 and $200,000-$300,000, respectively.

Thaddaeus Ropac

  • Tom Sachs’s handmade “Surveillance Camera” in plywood, epoxy, resin, and steel hardware for $90,000
  • Jack Pierson’s metal and light bulb-illuminated sign “Pray” from 2017 for $190,000
  • David Salle’s Pop Art-esque “The Acrobat” from 2016, in oil, acrylic, charcoal and archival digital print on linen, for $275,000

Victoria Miro

  • a work from Do Ho Suh’s “Exit Series” from 2016 sold in the mid-six figures

Wendi Norris

  • Peter Young “#15-1973” from 1973 sold to a West Coast collector for $55,000

Fleisher/Ollman

  • sold recently discovered outsider artist Felipe Jesus Consalvos‘s  “Untitled (Cigarmaker, Credator, healer & an),” for $20,000, while three of the artist’s collage-filled books sold in the $6,000-8,000 range, all to an otherwise unidentified American museum

Acquavella Galleries

  • sold two celestially themed Damian Loeb paintings in oil on linen from 2017, “Scutum,” at 60 by 60 inches and bearing an asking price of $185,000, and the 36-by-36 inch “Orion’s Sword,” which sold in the region of the $150,000 asking price

Galerie Perrotin

  • Josh Sperling’s “Strong Silent Type (Teal)” from 2016, scaled at 66 by 48 inches, sold immediately for $12,000, and three other similarly priced works also went fast

Spruth Magers

  • a major new work by Lynn Foulkes, “Night Train” from 2016 sold for $320,000
  • ceramic works by Rosemarie Trockel, including two from her series “As the Weird Woman Promised”
  • Zero Artist Otto Piene at €45,000 each

David Kordansky

  • sold out ten Tala Madani paintings dating from 2017 at prices ranging from $22,000 to $110,000

P.P.O.W.

  • sold two works by Martin Wong, including “Window Gate Diptych” from 1988 in acrylic on canvas, measuring 72 by 49 inches, for $185,000, and a trompe l’oeil finished found object, “Untitled (Brick Car Light)” from 1983, a car headlight painted in Wong’s signature all-over brick façade style, for $20,000

  • sold Georg Baselitz’s Bergspitze (2010) for $550,000
  • Robert Longo’s Untitled (Obama Leaving), 2017, for $500,000

Eykyn Maclean

  • Richard Serra’s Joplin (1996) went early in the day

Victoria Miro

  • sold 15 works in its booth—including Yayoi Kusama’s Solitude of the Earth (1994), which consisted of chairs, a table, and a cabinet done up in white—for as much as $500,000.

Lisson Gallery

  • sold three works by Anish Kapoor—Void (1990) for £1.2 million ($1.5 million), Glisten Blue (2017) for £600,000 ($775,000), and Spire (2004) for £450,000 ($581,000)

Jack Shainman

  • El Anatsui’s Ascension (2014) sold for $1.1 million

Levy Gorvy

  • three works by Pat Steir found buyers for between $200,000 and $340,000,
  • Cy Twombly’s Sperlonga Drawing (1959) sold for $450,000.
