Art in Swiss Hotel Seized for Tax Avoidance … Again

March 7, 2017 by Marion Maneker

Dolder Grand Lobby with Warhol

The Swiss hotelier Urs Schwarzenbach has been raided by federal tax authorities … again. They took works by Miró, Botero, Dubuffet and Niki de Saint Phalle which they think Schwarzenbach avoided paying VAT upon. The Hotel Dolder Grand has been here before:

The authorities confiscate some 30 of the 150 works of art in the hotel, with a market value of more than 50 million Swiss francs […] At the same time the Customs inspectors are also looking at the premises of the Villa Falkenstein on the Schanzengasse, where business owner and hotel owner Urs E. Schwarzenbach runs his family office. The reason: The customs authorities accuse the 68-year-old businessman of having introduced art objects with the avoidance of VAT.
