Who Speaks for the Artist? Estates Aren’t Always Virtuous

Dinesh Vazirani, the founder of Saffronart, offers a reminder that relying on artists’ estates to determine authenticity may not be the best system for the art market. The problem, Vazirani says, is that the artist’s heirs may not be competent to authenticate.

“To me, artist estates are double-edged swords […] because someone’s son or daughter is not always an expert of the artist’s works.

“One classic example is of artist FN Souza. In the end, the only people who made money from his estate were the lawyers.”
