Colin Gleadell has a narrative of Phillips’s growing momentum in the marketplace. He spoke to art market gadfly Kenny Schachter about the auction house because Schachter has been his usual blunt self about Phillips in the past. Now Kenny is optimistic about Phillips—which is news in itself.
The bigger news in Gleadell’s piece is the emergence from talk among current and former Christie’s staff that Contemporary market star, Loic Gouzer, he of the themed sale and Instagram antics, is restive.
At art world watering holes, the speculation is that Gouzer might be thinking of joining a behemoth private dealership. Then, again, the spear-fishing enthusiast was recently on Instagram (above) gathering work for another one of his marquee theme sales.
Far more likely is that Gouzer will try to make the most of his new role in the company now that Brett Gorvy has become a dealer. Or, as Gouzer said this morning in response to the rumors:
It’s all bullshit. Everybody keeps calling me about this or that rumor and I don’t know who started it.
Will hired expertise make Phillips a serious contender in the art world? (Telegraph)
