Cao Fei, Chosen to Create 18th BMW Art Car, Leads New Generation of Chinese Artists Globally

September 2, 2016 by Marion Maneker

Cao Fei BMW art carThe South China Morning Post plumps for a new generation of less political artists trying to emerge globally:

“We are used to associating Chinese artists with the Cultural Revolution and now the younger generation have a refreshed approach from their predecessors,” says Alexander Platon, senior director at Marlborough Fine Art in London.

“Their ideology and their individual experiences are totally different to the previous generation, so their art is broad and not purely political, which brings them closer to practising artists from other parts of the world.” This has resulted in a host of new materials and interesting experimental styles coming to the market.

Meanwhile, Cao Fei, one of the artists featured in the South China Morning Post has been commissioned to create the 18th BMW art car which will debut in 2017. And the SCMP also offers this short primer on rising Chinese stars:
