David Bowie Talks About Art (with Julian Schnabel)

July 14, 2016 by Marion Maneker

Today’s news that Sotheby’s will be offering David Bowie’s art collection and design objects in November brings to mind a revealing public moment when David Bowie discussed his art collection, art and artists with Julian Schnabel and Charlie Rose. The  occasion for the conversation was the release of Schnabel’s Jean-Michel Basquiat biopic with Bowie playing Andy Warhol.

In the clip above, you can see Schnabel and Bowie start to have a meandering and personal conversation that Charlie Rose tries to keep up with. The fun starts at 26:00 but you’ll have to sit through the remaining half hour to get a sense of how Bowie thought about (and possibly collected) art.

Keep an eye out for the moment when Bowie reveals that he owns a Basquiat and one of Schnabel’s works without Schnabel having previously known the fact (or so he says for the interview.)
