How to Measure a Work of Art’s Performance? Well, Is It a Good Museum Selfie?

Katya Kazakina asks the eternal question: How do you make an impact with a museum of contemporary art? The answer, of course, comes from the new Garage Center for Contemporary Art that just opened in Moscow with a show of wildly popular global artist, Yayoi Kusama, and her infinity room:

“It was the most popular artwork at the opening,” said Christina Steinbrecher-Pfandt, director of the Vienna Contemporary art fair, who attended the Garage event for 2,000 VIPs on June 10. “There was a huge queue to see it. It’s a perfect museum selfie.”

Facing a public that remains skeptical of Contemporary art, the Garage’s choice of Kusama seems tactically astute:

“Russians loved Kusama,” said Inga Rubenstein, a Russian-born, New York-based collector who attended the opening. “The work is easy to understand because it’s so beautiful.”
