June 12, 2015 by Marion Maneker

NC Wyeth (80-120k) 353k USD
Led by NC Wyeth’s illustration of Robinson Crusoe which sold for $353k or nearly three times the high estimate, Freeman’s Spring sale of American Art and Pennsylvania Impressionists had strong sales of $3.4m. The 125-lot sale reflects the growing pace of sales in American art, a category nearly left for dead recently:

Freeman’s has witnessed tremendous growth within this collecting category since separating their Fine American & European Art auction into two specialty sales in 2013. The average lot value for American Art & Pennsylvania Impressionists works has increased 276%, while final sale results have doubled to 240% with fewer lots offered in each auction.
