No Flood of Monets on the Market, Sotheby’s ‘just fortunate enough to have six’

April 3, 2015 by Marion Maneker

Monet, Bassin aux nymphéas, les rosiers (18-25m USD)

The Wall Street Journal’s announcement of Sotheby’s cache of six Monets for this Spring’s sales in New York has this great quote humble-bragging Sotheby’s strength in the category:

“I don’t see there being a flood of Monets,” said [Elizabeth] Gorayeb. “There are very few on the market, and we are just fortunate enough to have six that are in good condition.”

Perhaps more telling of the overall market is the observation that the top end of the market continues to be fed by new money:

David Nash, an art dealer and former Sotheby’s auctioneer, said demand for Monets has been particularly strong among new collectors.

“There have been some quite good ones that have come up for sale recently,” he said. “He’s an easy artist to appreciate.”
