Sotheby’s Pops the $50m Question in May—Who Wants Lichtenstein’s ‘Ring’?

March 20, 2015 by Marion Maneker

Roy Lichtenstein, The RingKelly Crow gets first bite at Sotheby’s announcement that they’ve got Roy Lichtenstein’s The Ring and they’re putting a $50m price tag on it:

It may also help that “The Ring” comes from the coveted collection of retired plastics manufacturer and Chicagoan Stefan Edlis, who bought the painting for $2.2 million 18 years ago from French collector Jean-Marie Rossi. He, in turn, bought “The Ring” from the artist’s gallery in 1963 for $1,000.

In an interview, Mr. Edlis said “The Ring” was the first hand-painted Lichtenstein he ever bought. He says it has been hanging in the media room of his Chicago apartment for years. “I think it’s so sexy how he takes this quiet moment of a proposal and turns it into an exciting crash,” Mr. Edlis said. “Clearly, the woman accepted.”
