Grotjahn v. Kassay: A Tale of the Tape

February 20, 2014 by Marion Maneker

Using Artnet’s data and isolating certain series, a new website called White Walls Are Ugly run by a Contemporary collector who plans to run 2-3 graphs a week, has begun to publish some charts. Here’s the author’s statement on the project:

This is the most volatile segment in art market. The purpose and mission is to share data with collectors and others who want to better holistically comprehend specific artist markets which are often reported on in one off sales anecdotally, but subtle shifts and changes in their markets aren’t noticed or reported on.

Here’s the first two efforts charting the continuing rise of Mark Grotjahn’s Butterfly works and the uneven trajectory of Jacob Kassay’s 48 x 36 Silver works:

The bar graphs show total sale volume against the left axis; the line shows average price against the right axis.
