Hauser & Wirth celebrates one of the first German art gallerists in New York, Reinhard Onnasch, with a massive exhibit of his legendary collection from the 1950s thorough the 70s, when Pop Art, Minimalism, and Abstract Expressionism ruled the city’s artistic scene.
The ten-room exhibit, “Re-View: Onnasch Collection,” at the gallery’s Chelsea location begins with iconic paintings of Abstract Expressionists, such as Barnett Newman and Clyfford Still. It proceeds to the revolutionary everyday object sculptures of Claes Oldenburg and an extensive Assemblage collection by self-taught West Coast artist, Edward Kienholz, for whom Onnasch was an important early advocate.
