Tobias Meyer’s Russian Constructivist Bird Vacation Home and Other Encomiums

November 23, 2013 by Marion Maneker

Tobias Meyer's Liebeskind House

The Friday afternoon news dump of Tobias Meyer’s departure from Sotheby’s forced reporters to play catch up. But catch up they did with the New York Times even including Daniel Liebeskind’s comment that the weekend home he designed for Meyer and his spouse was like a “Russian Constructivist bird.”

Carol Vogel also had these quotes:

“People are surprised,” said Larry Gagosian, the super-dealer. “Tobias has been a larger-than-life presence in the auction world. He wore two big hats and that will be a challenge to fill.”

“But it is his knowledge of post-war art that is unique,” said Dominique Lévy, a private dealer who called his departure from Sotheby’s “an enormous loss.”

“Tobias has a great eye and terrific relationships with buyers and sellers,” David Geffen said. “He always gave me good advice and really knew what he was talking about.”
