Dia Suit Dropped; Sotheby’s Sale to Go Through

November 12, 2013 by Marion Maneker

John Chamberlain, Candy Andy ($2-3m)

Randy Kennedy reports that the suit to stop the sale of works from the Dia Foundation at Sotheby’s this week has been withdrawn by Heiner Friedrich and Fariha de Menil Friedrich:

The Sotheby’s sale will include Twombly’s “Poems to the Sea,” from 1959, an important suite of 24 drawings, expected to sell for $6 million to $8 million, and Newman’s “Genesis — The Break,” a 1946 abstract canvas that predates his well-known “zip” paintings. Also on sale will be “Shortstop,” a 1958 sculpture by Chamberlain that set the artist on the course of what became his signature method, making works from crushed car parts.
