Carol Vogel reports that Sotheby’s will sell Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster) this November in its Evening sale of Contemporary art:
Although the catalog will say that the painting’s estimate is “on request,” Mr. Meyer said he believes it could sell for $60 million to $80 million. The estimate, he explained, is based on the painting’s rarity — it is the last of this size left in private hands. The three others are in museums, and this one has belonged to celebrated collectors including Gunter Sachs, Charles Saatchi and Thomas Ammann. “Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)” is being sold by an unidentified European collector who has owned it for more than 20 years. “Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I),” a smaller, single-panel painting also from 1963, sold at Christie’s in New York in 2007 for $71.7 million. The price was, and still is, a record for Warhol at auction. (Paintings by him have reportedly sold for as much as $110 million privately.)
