Carol Vogel has the announcement that Eric Clapton is bringing back to market another of the three Richter abstract paintings he bought in 2001. The works were acquired together for $3.4m. Last year, Clapton’s abstract set a record for Richter and any living artist at $34.2m. This canvas will be estimated at $18-22m by Christie’s for its November 12th sale:.
The painting that Mr. Clapton is putting up for sale in November is similar stylistically to the one he sold last year — the surface has layer upon layer of paint applied with a squeegee until the surface has a watery depth to it — but it has more golden tones than the others. “It has the sense of a full fall abstract landscape,” said Brett Gorvy, worldwide chairman of postwar and contemporary art at Christie’s.
