Jay-Z Blows Up Contemporary Art

July 11, 2013 by Marion Maneker

Jay-Z Stare Down

The Wall Street Journal’s Speakeasy covered Jay-Z’s secret 6-hr performance of his new art-obsessed rap tune:

Rapper Jay-Z decided to try to combine art and commerce for the filming of his latest video “Picasso Baby.” The rapper surprised fans and art lovers by appearing at Chelsea’s Pace Gallery to perform the song for six hours straight. Evoking Tilda Swinton and Marina Abramovic, Jay-Z made the audience part of his show.

Jerry Salzburg was there. And, of course, it was all about Jerry. But what makes the event so remarkable is the way the Contemporary art world is flattered and excited by the attention.

According to Salz, George Condo, Ryan McGuinness, Diane Widmaier Picasso and a horde of others couldn’t stay away.

Meanwhile, Jay-Z isn’t the only music world star smitten by Basquiat as images appeared online of Australian DJ Ruby Rose’s new crown tattoo:
