The Curator’s Olympics

July 1, 2013 by Marion Maneker

The Wall Street Journal throws a spotlight on curators and the curious new event in Paris where 1600 curators submitted proposals that were winnowed by a select group to 53 which were given €40k to be realized at Nouvelles Vague:

“The idea was to see if there are curators out there who will broaden our list of artists worth following,” says Mr. Loisy. “Though this phenomenon of the freelance curator started some time ago with Hans-Ulrich Obrist and others, it has grown increasingly important over the last five years.” […]

If Nouvelles Vagues proves successful, Mr. Loisy doesn’t rule out creating it on a biannual basis—and perhaps even expanding the event. “I have spoken to people who are interested by the concept in Berlin and Madrid,” he says. “People are always looking for new directions and new ways of doing exhibitions.”
