ArtBasel Hong Kong Sales Report

  • Wako Works of Art: sold a postcard-sized Gerhard Richter painting for $50,000 during the show’s first hour.
  • Gallery Yang: Yan Bing installation sold to a Swiss banker living in Hong Kong for $62,000.
  • Galerie Chantal Crousel: sold three Lady Liberty segments from Danh Vo’s We The People project for prices ranging from $50,000 to $115,000.

  • dianne tanzer gallery + projects: eight pieces by Juan Ford fetched a total of $150,000.
  • Tina Keng Gallery: sold Wang Huaiqing’s large-scale painting “Chinese Emperor – 1″ (2008-2013) for $2.6 million.
  • David Zwirner sold  Michaël  Borremans’s “The Modification” (2001) at around $500,000, Daniel Richter’s “Duisen” (2004) in the region of $750,000, and Adel Abdessemed’s “Cheval de Turin” (2012) for around $850,000.
  • Van de Weghe Fine Art: the late Pablo Picasso “Visage de Femme” (1970) for $175,000 and Damien Hirst’s round butterfly painting “Blue Angel” from 2005 for a little less than $500,000.
  • Paul Kasmin sold a set of 12 photographs by Tseng Kwong Chi, spanning 1979 to 1985, for a price in the range of $104,000; Mark Ryden’s “Porcelain Meat Dress” (2012) for $75,000; a Hong Kong-based collector snapped up Dzine “Untitled (Mandala Crest)” from 2013 for $55,000.
  • Pace: Yoshimoto Nara paintings sold like hotcakes at the Pace booth, which found buyers for eight of them, with prices ranging from $33,000-$400,000. Sculptures by Zhang Xiaogang proved similarly popular, with four of them selling for between $100,000-$300,000.
  • Sprüth Magers sold Thomas Scheibitz’s “Monument” (2012) for €56,000 and “Plaza” (2012) €30,000, each to a different Asian collector. The gallery also sold the George Condo drawing “Untitled (Sculpture Study)” (2004) for $30,000.
  • Hauser & Wirth found a buyer for Rashid Johnson’s “I Hope I’m Funny” (2012) for $60,000, while Nagoya’s Standing Pine gallery sold eight pieces by Shinji Ogawa for nearly $100,000 total.

  • Galerie Gmurzynska said it sold $3.5 million worth of Boteros, including $1.3 million for the 2012 painting “Quarteto,” which went to a collector form Malaysia.

  • Lehmann Maupin:  Tracey Emin’s neon Now Love is for You!, 2013, for $75,500
  • Arndt: Eko Nugroho’s pink dog, Flower Generation II, 2012, priced at $54,000, which Adelaide’s South Australian Museum bought
  • Victoria Miro & Ota Fine Arts: 18 works by Yayoi Kusama had sold by Friday afternoon for up to $2m each
  • Pace Gallery: sold all four of Zhang Xiaogang’s newly made painted sculptures
  • Lin & Lin Gallery: four oil paintings by the Chinese artist Liu Wei had sold by Wednesday afternoon, including the huge The world that can be constructed is not true, 2012, which went to a Taiwanese private collector for Rmb3.5m ($565,000)
  • Lombard Freid: sold Lee Kit’s Honey Bee Organic, 2013 to a Hong Kong buyer for €16,000
  • Yang Gallery: two of Yan Bing’s giant peasants’ tools dressed in suits sold for HK$50,000 each to a collector from mainland China

Brand new: the name is the game in Hong Kong (The Art Newspaper)

  • Galerie Thaddeus Ropac sold the Robert Longo drawing “Untitled (F-15 Eagle)” (2012) for $330,000, and  Tom Sachs’s “American Flag” (2003) for $60,000.
  • Hauser & Wirth: works by Sterling Ruby, “SP234″ (2013), to a Chinese foundation for over $250,000; Bharti Kher, “Coded” (2012), for $180,000, to a European collection; Thomas Houseago, “Two Fingers” (2012), for $165,000, also to a European collection; Zhang Enli, “The Color Balls” (2012), for $140,000 to an Asian collection; Rashid Johnson, “Ulysses” (2012), sold to a European collection for $90,000.
  • Hanart TZ sold four works by Qiu Zhijie for a total of HK$1 million.
  • Pearl Lam, sold Zhu Jinshi’s “Four Noblemen” (2012) for $195,000.
  • White Cube: Theaster Gates’s “Horizon With Shadows” (2013, $135,000), which went to an Asian collector, as did Gary Hume’s “Suicide Showman” (2013, $100,000).
  • Blum & Poe sold Takashi Murakami’s “Pom & Me: On the Red Mound of the Dead” (2013) for $400,000 and Yoshitomo Nara’s “Close your eyes, think about…” (2013) for $160,000.
  • Casa Triangulo: sold Mariana Palma’s “Sem Titulo” (2013) for $60,000 to a Hong Kong-based European collector.
  • Galeria OMR found buyers for Ruben Ortiz Torres’s “Showing the copper” (2013) at $90,000 and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s “Bifurcation Shadow Object 2″ (2012), which sold for $35,000.

  • Marian Goodman sold a Gerhard Richter photograph on six panels to an Asian collector in the opening hours of the fair.

At Art Basel Hong Kong, International Dealers Bet Big on Asian Market (GalleristNY)

  • Arndt: sold a Jittish Kallat to the Belgian collector Guy Ullens, tagged at $180,000

The Art Market: first they took Miami, now they take Hong Kong (Financial Times)

  • Paul Kasmin Gallery sold three pieces from Francois-Xavier and Claude Lalanne’s “Famille De Moutons” series of sheep sculptures for a total of $650,000 to a Hong Kong-based collector; Ivan Navarro neon and mirror works “Sway (Grand Gateway)” (2011) and “War Hole” (2012), the latter fetching $20,000 from a Swiss collector.
  • Hauser & Wirth had another big day, selling two works on paper and four paintings by Zhang Enli at prices ranging from $25,000-$180,000;  Michael Raedecker’s “suspended” (2008) for $200,000.
  • Arndt: two editions of Entang Wiharso “Feast Table: Undeclared Perceptions” (2012) for $90,000 each; one of them to Berlin’s Thomas Olbricht Collection; Jiechang Yang’s “Burning Tree” (2009), which was snapped up for €70,000 by a German collector.
  • Long March Space from Beijing sold Made In Company’s “Play 201301″ (2013), which is featured in the fair’s Encounters section, for $325,000 to Australia’s White Rabbit Collection; Wang Zhan’s “Artificial Rock No.146″ (2011) for $280,000.
  • Tina Keng: sold eight works from Jiang Xu’s “Eight Tall Sunflowers” series for a total of $2.6 million.
  • SCAI The Bathhouse sold Daisuke Ohha’s “BUKKA” (2011) for $22,000.
  • ShanghART sold Yang Fudong’s “Forest Diary” (2000) for €45,000.
  • Mendes Wood sold three untitled works by Lucas Arruda in the range of $10,000-20,000 each.
  • De Sarthe, did especially well, moving works including pieces by Alexander Calder and Lin Jing Jing for a total of $4 million in sales, all of the to Asian collectors intending to open private museums.
  • Casa Triângulo sold two untitled works by Mariana Palma for $14,000 each to Hong Kong-based collectors.

Art Basel in Hong Kong Keeps Rolling With Strong Sales on First Public Day (Artinfo)

  • Victoria Miro gallery sold a wall-sized painting by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama for £1.32-million
  • White Cube sold a Gary Hume sculpture for £66 243
  • 15 sculptures by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, depicting a cartoon version of the artist and his dog, sold for £89 428 each.
