Vanity Fair reports that their reporting has given the consignor some cause for concern on Ruth Klingman’s supposed last Pollock:
But just before the work was supposed to go under the hammer, Phillips de Pury & Company removed Red, Black & Silver from a scheduled September 20th sale to further research its authenticity—a move that was in part prompted by this magazine’s reporting.
“Following the article in Vanity Fair, the [Kligman] Trust was approached by parties interested in possibilities for further study of the painting, and felt it in the interest of Ruth and Red, Black & Silver to investigate these options before taking the painting to auction,” said Davey Frankel, executor of Kligman’s estate and co-trustee of a trust in her name. He added that Phillips de Pury & Company will continue to represent the painting and that no new auction date had been set, although a spokesperson from Phillips mentioned a possible early-2013 auction date.
