Momentum of Women Contemporary Artists Slows at NY Auctions

The Economist zooms in on the issue of women artists and their prices offering the chart above. But what the article fails to mention is that the New York sales saw no new records. In recent years, Kusama, Sherman and Bourgeois all had record sale prices. Joan Mitchell—whom the Economist points to as the most traded female artist—had been getting strong prices up until this month.

In the New York sales, Cindy Sherman suffered from a glut of work following her MoMA retrospective to market and Mitchell saw weak sales. One of the few Agnes Martins to be sold in a prominent auction was bought in.
