Art By Subscription: Will It Work?

February 27, 2012 by Marion Maneker

Yet another internet art business has emerged to serve the presumed demand for easier access to art. This one is RiseArt.com and serves the United Kingdom:

Scott Phillips, who co-founded Rise Art with ex-Googler Marcos Steverlynck, said: “Buying art can be an overwhelming commitment — how can consumers be sure that the work they’ve seen on a website or in a gallery will look as good in their homes? We want to open up the art market and help rising artists extend their visibility. On the ownership side, it shouldn’t only be accessible to the wealthy or the well-connected.”

Rise Art features artworks from emerging artists such as Chris Shaw Hughes,Pedro Guimaraes an Edd Pearman. It has a board of curators including American art dealer Kenny Schachter and gallery owner Edward Cutler. Artists can submit their work to the Rise Art site and then the board hand picks the artists’ work to be featured and sold on the site.
