Manet Once Owned By Sargent Held Up in UK

December 8, 2011 by Marion Maneker

The UK government has held up an export license for Manet’s Portrait of Mademoiselle Claus painted in 1868 but purchased by John Singer Sargent in 1884 at Drouot. It is not clear whether the work has been sold (which would be most likely) or simply whether the owner is only preparing to sell the work:

The Government has put a temporary export bar on an unfinished portrait by French impressionist Edouard Manet. […] The export bar will run out in February but can be extended to August if “a serious intention” to raise the recommended price of £28,350,000 is expressed.
