New Yorkers Don't Rank Among Art Collectors

June 28, 2011 by Marion Maneker

Pia Catton discovers that although majority of ArtNews’s top 200 collectors have apartments in New York City, only a small minority–and decreasing–make their primary residence in Manhattan:

Among the world’s 200 top art collectors, 37 call New York home, according to ARTnews magazine’s annual list, which was released Monday. The number of New Yorkers on the list declined by two from last year, though as editor and publisher Milton Esterow said, “the majority have a New York apartment.” A notable area of growth this year was the number of top collectors based in Switzerland, which rose to 13 from last year’s nine.
