Jasper Cropsey Makes $840k

May 16, 2011 by Marion Maneker

The Jasper Cropsey painting “Prospect Point,  Niagara in Winter” (below) sold for $552,000 with premium over a $40-60k estimate yesterday in Larchmont, NY. The painting, along with a companion work “Autumn in America” that made  $288,000, was found in the basement of a home. The works had been inherited.

Both works were bought by the trade but one dealer may have been bidding for a client and the auction house, Clarke, doesn’t think either will appear on the market any time soon. Both works need cleaning.
