Anders Petterson told us at Artelligence that Warhol’s work makes up 17% of the auction sales in 2010. Last week, Warhol’s work accounted for 30% of the Evening sale total.
Overall, including the day sales, Warhol’s work brought in $179m out of almost $718m in sales or 25%. Even though the top Warhol works struggled with their estimates, the Contemporary market was even more dependent upon the artist this season than last.
You’ll see too from the chart below that Christie’s dominance in Contemporary art comes from its commanding position in the Warhol market with more dollars generated than all the other houses combined despite not having an overall market share in the number of works
