Sotheby’s Mid-Season Contemporary sale was over-shadowed by the Neuberger Berman sale. But the historical data tells us more about the health of the Contemporary art market than that idiosyncratic auction. The numbers show the mid-season market recovering from its nadir in 2009. Sotheby’s has made less progress toward reviving the sales volume in it’s particular market which differs somewhat from the market Christie’s cultivates with its First Open sales. But the average prices have snapped back into line with the numbers from 2007.
