The National Post in Canada offers this obituary of pioneering Toronto art dealer Mira Godard:
Takao Tanabe, Jean-Paul Riopelle, David Milne, Yves Gaucher, Alex Colville and Christopher Pratt are among those whose work she represented. The Bucharest-born Godard studied art history at the Ecole du Louvre and physics and math at the Sorbonne University in Paris. She started by purchasing Montreal’s Agnes Lefort Gallery in 1961, operating it herself the next year.
In 1972, she opened her Toronto gallery in Yorkville with great fanfare. By 1983 she had closed both her Montreal and Calgary galleries and handled all of her artists from Toronto. She brought important international exhibitions to her gallery, including a show of Picasso paintings.
She was lauded as an astute art entrepreneur.
