Salander Gets 6 to 18 Years

August 3, 2010 by Marion Maneker

The Wall Street Journal reports on Lawrence Salander’s sentencing today:

Lawrence B. Salander, the onetime co-owner and manager of Salander-O’Reilly Galleries LLC, admitted in March to stealing millions of dollars from art owners by selling paintings and other artwork he didn’t own. Mr. Salander also admitted to luring people to invest in fraudulent ownership interests involving works of art.

“I know that I’ve wronged you,” Mr. Salander said in court before the sentencing. “I am truly sorry for my behavior. You trusted me and I betrayed you.”

New York State Supreme Court Justice Michael J. Obus in Manhattan sentenced Mr. Salander, 61 years old, to six years to 18 years in prison. The judge also ordered him to pay $114.86 million in restitution.
