Haunch of Venom

June 2, 2010 by Marion Maneker

Pia Catton adds some good quotes to the Haunch of Venison story in the Wall Street Journal:

“The gallery is like any other large and important gallery that evolves,” said Emilio Steinberger, who with Barrett White will continue to be a co-director of the New York gallery.

Messrs. Blain and Southern, well respected in the field, were not available for comment. The turnover intensifies curiosity about the enterprise: The combination of a gallery within an auction house has long raised questions about the effect on prices, and about the sharing of clients or information.

“No one in the gallery world has got a clue what is the real function of Haunch of Venison,” said Andrew Fabricant, director of the Richard Gray Gallery in New York.

But according to Matthew Carey-Williams—who after the founders’ departure has been appointed director of the London location—the function of the gallery is to do right by its artists.
