The Miami Herald has the details on the planned move of Design Miami away from the Design District and adjacent to ArtBasel Miami Beach. The city still has to approve the plans:
Robins said he expected the Design District to remain a vibrant locale during Basel weekend, just as it was before the design show’s founding in 2005. Robins, one of Miami’s top art collectors, organized massive gallery block parties, collection exhibits and other art-related happenings before starting Design Miami.
“Why did they come before Design Miami?” Robins asked. “Because the Design District was hosting important cultural events. Not because there were design showrooms here.”
In 2007, Robins sold a 10 percent stake in Design Miami to MCH Group, the owner of Art Basel. MCH also owns 50 percent of Design Miami’s annual Switzerland show, which coincides with the original Art Basel fair in MCH’s hometown of Basel, Switzerland.
