Picasso & Braque: Together Again

May 11, 2010 by Marion Maneker

The Economist reports that the buyer of the Brody’s Picasso–Nude, Green Leaves and Bust–also won the bidding for the late Braque painting that was one of the Brody’s prize possessions:

The bidder who bought the Picasso this week also paid $10.2m, another world record, for George Braque’s 1953 “La Treille”. A nice evening’s shopping.

Not only was the work a record for a Braque, it was twice the high estimate for a work that even the auction house considered a difficult sale. So while many critics dismissed the quality of the Picasso, the buyer ends up snapping up a connoisseurs picture in earlier in the same sale.
