Indian Artists Come from the North

April 14, 2010 by Marion Maneker

Colin Gleadell reports on the upcoming sale of Indian works by North England collector, Frank Cohen, who is selling through Phillips de Pury in London.

Ironically, the sale is to be held at the Saatchi Gallery while Saatchi’s collection of Indian art is still on view in the exhibition The Empire Strikes Back. The rivalry between the two collectors is acknowledged, but friendly. Cohen held an exhibition of Indian art two years ago which he called Passage to India. Having put on his exhibition before Saatchi, he is now also selling ahead of his rival. The BRIC sale, based on artists from the emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China, goes on view this Saturday before the sales on April 23 and 24. Among Cohen’s consignments is Counting Down by TV Santhosh. The installation of 30 steel-and-fibreglass dogs with LED counters strapped to their backs is estimated at £50,000 to £70,000.
