The press is filled with announcements of the May New York sale cycle’s star lots. Lindsay Pollock has a few on Bloomberg including Tom Ford’s purple Warhol self portrait estimated at $15m and measuring 9ft. square. Ford is making no secret of his ownership or his active art collecting.
Sotheby’s Tobias Meyer says he expects 8 active bidders on the work within the estimate range.
The house has also landed a splashy 1961 red Mark Rothko painting, estimated to fetch $18 million to $25 million. The nearly 8-foot tall painting with two reddish rectangles, is likely to be the May 12 sale’s projected top lot. The same painting sold for $1.87 million at Christie’s in New York in 1997.
