The National reports on Dubai’s new effort to esteem its art patrons at the upcoming art fair in March:
People who have contributed at least Dh50,000 (US$13,600) to develop Emirati artists may be in line for special recognition at the Art Dubai fair in March with the launch of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Patrons of the Arts Awards.
“Patronage is the catalyst that drives the growth of the arts,” said Mishaal al Gergawi, the project and events manager for the judging body, the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. “For the first time in the region, Dubai is taking the lead in identifying and honouring patrons of the arts, whose support has been incredibly essential in establishing the city as a home to a thriving cultural movement.”
The awards, which include a distinguished patrons category for anyone investing at least Dh5 million for three consecutive years, were unveiled yesterday as part of the line-up for Art Dubai, now in its fourth year. The event will feature 65 galleries from 29 countries – comparable to last year’s representation. Emirati artists will be given free access to the fair and invited to join workshops and seminars.
