Scope Sales

December 3, 2009 by Marion Maneker

The Miami Herald talks to Mike Weiss who is showing at Scope:

His New York-based Mike Weiss Gallery sold several pieces by early afternoon, including a couple of wall-sized paintings by Berlin’s Stefanie Gutheil, one for $10,000 and one for $15,000. Plus three editions of a giant stainless steel ring by Chinese artist Liao Yibai, which went for $40,000, $45,000 and $50,000.

But Weiss says it’s costing him about $150,000 to be at Scope, including shipping artworks from China, Germany, Israel and elsewhere and flying in all the artists he’s showing.

“When I sell every piece I brought, I’ll be happy,” Weiss says. “I need to sell upwards of $1 million. OK, $600,000 wouldn’t be bad.”
